Johnny Gentry III

Chief Executive Officer | Community Works CDC

Johnny Douglas Gentry, III was born in Houston, Texas and raised in Central California. He endured a very troubled youth involving gangs, drugs and crime. Johnny survived the California streets through athletics and a Baptist upbringing. He was recruited by Santa Clara University in 1989 where he played college football. After a career-ending knee injury, Johnny fell back into a lifestyle of crime. Facing a 50-year aggravated prison sentence in 1996, Johnny hit rock bottom and called on the name of Jesus Christ in a jail cell. It was in the midst of this trial that he experienced a spiritual awakening and divine encounter with the Lord. The criminal case was soon dismissed. Johnny later accepted his calling to preach The Gospel, believing that the mistakes of his past would one day serve as a powerful testimony. He was ordained as an elder in 2001 and as an apostolic overseer in 2011. Johnny has over 20 years of ministry and community outreach service through organizations such as Change Happens, Star of Hope Men’s Development Center and Free Indeed Ministries which he founded in 2003. Johnny is a certified substance abuse counselor with experience in at-risk youth intervention, vocational training, life management counseling, juvenile offender mentor programming and housing adult male for ex-offenders.

Johnny is the founding pastor of Free Indeed Church International, an inter-denominational spirit-filled church located in Northeast Houston. He oversees four Free Indeed Church congregations in Kenya, Africa. He is CEO of Community Works CDC, a faith-based 501(c)(3) community nonprofit organization committed to At-Risk Youth, Workforce Development and Economic Redevelopment in Northeast Houston. Johnny is CEO and principal of Gentry Global Group LLC, a business venture for helping others build wealth through real estate investing. He is happily married to Jenice Gentry for 23 years. Together they’ve raised their four children and they most enjoy family time as they serve the Free Indeed church family and their community.
